Six platform updates, one regulatory shake-up, and a new plan for UK music.
The World Cup's done and the school gates are closing for summer. Attention is shifting from shared national moments to smaller, personal ones, and that's the story running through this month's updates too.
Spotify's rewarding engaged fans with ticket access and TikTok's turning album launches into worlds you can step inside. Google's tightening bid targets and Reddit's cleaning up its data so AI chatbots keep trusting it. Brussels has handed Google a fresh Android and Search compliance headache, and Westminster's published its plan for UK music. The thread running through it all: platforms are getting stricter about what counts as real, and the advantage goes to whoever can prove it. Here's what you need to know.
O1. META
Facebook Lead Ads Can Now Book Appointments Directly
Meta has launched embedded appointment booking for Facebook lead ads, integrating Calendly and HighLevel (HubSpot due in early August) directly into the ad itself. Setup needs no coding: paste a scheduling link, select 'Book time' as the CTA, and publish. The point is closing the gap between form submission and follow-up, when a lead's interest is highest, rather than losing momentum to a hours-later email or a separate booking page. Read more
O2. SPOTIFY
Superfans get the golden ticket
Spotify's Reserved feature went live in the US on 18 June, using streams, saves, shares and location data to identify an artist's most engaged fans and hold tickets exclusively for them. In the same week, superfan platform EVEN extended direct-to-fan sales and data ownership tools to Cinq Music's roster. The read for us: engagement is becoming currency, not just a vanity metric. The opportunity is building an explicit privilege into every release, early access, a ticket window, a limited drop, paired with data capture so the value outlasts the campaign. Read more
O3. TIKTOK
Madonna's launch turns the feed into a world
Confessions II's rollout paired a global TikTok LIVE premiere with London and New York pop-ups, an in-app fan hub and limited merchandise, pulling over 2.1 million unique LIVE viewers. The takeaway isn't the scale, it's the sequence: fans could watch, react, vote, make, buy and meet across connected moments. Smaller releases can borrow the same architecture without the global budget, turning a content schedule into somewhere fans actively want to be. Read more
O4. REDDIT
Reddit is cleaning up its data for the AI era
Reddit says it's now facing more than 23 million spam views a day, but its updated AI-powered detection is stopping around 25,000 spam posts and comments daily, a 20% drop in spam exposure year-on-year. The platform has also removed nearly 2 million inauthentic upvotes a day over the past three months. The context matters: Reddit has become a key source for AI chatbot answers precisely because its upvoted discussions read as genuine consumer sentiment, so protecting that signal from manipulation is directly tied to its value as a brand visibility channel. Split testing is now open to every Reddit advertiser
Reddit's split testing tool is now generally available in Ads Manager, letting any advertiser run two ad variants at once and get a clear winner at 65% confidence, no Reddit ads contact required. Tests run two to six weeks, split the audience at user level with one variable changed, and come with pre-built templates so no testing expertise is needed. In early testing, four out of five split tests successfully identified a winning variant on ROAS. Read more
O5. GOOGLE
Google Ads will start taking your target literally
From 17 August, campaigns limited by budget on target-based bidding will optimise more consistently towards whatever CPA or ROAS figure is actually entered, not the stronger performance you might currently be enjoying. A campaign set to a £10 target CPA but achieving £5 could see performance drift back towards £10 if left untouched. Every affected Search, Shopping, Performance Max, Demand Gen and Travel campaign needs a review before the change lands. Read more
Youtube frequency controls get easier to manage
Google has expanded reach and frequency controls, including target frequency and frequency caps, to video campaign groups, letting advertisers set a single exposure goal across multiple YouTube campaigns while keeping individual budgets and creative separate. Google's own testing found a video exposure frequency of 2.7 per week delivered a 19% ROI lift. A unified view of unique reach and average weekly impressions across grouped campaigns is included, with Display & Video 360 support coming soon. Read more
O6. OPENAI
ChatGPT Ads Manager Gets a Serious Upgrade OpenAI emailed advertisers on 9 July with a batch of ChatGPT Ads Manager updates. Custom audiences now let advertisers upload lists of 25K or more users to include or suppress from campaigns, with bid multipliers available at ad group level. A new Overview tab surfaces account health and performance recommendations in a more flexible trend chart, and suggested ad drafts pull existing website metadata to prefill an image, title and description for review, not AI-generated copy or imagery. A more compact static ad card format is rolling out across web and mobile, and campaigns can now target Japan and South Korea. Read more
O7. THE BIGGER PICTURE
Live Music Is Pulling in Record Numbers
UK Music's latest figures show 24.7 million music tourists attended UK concerts and festivals in 2025, spending a record £11.2 billion, up 11.3% on 2024. Overseas visitors drove much of the growth, up 26.8%, pulled in by stadium runs from Oasis, Beyoncé, Coldplay and Dua Lipa. It's a strong reminder that a well-timed tour date still moves real spend into hotels, transport and hospitality, not just ticket sales, and that international fans will travel specifically for a UK-only date. Premium TV Gets Easier to Buy
Universal Ads launched in the UK on 23 June, letting smaller advertisers plan a single campaign across ITV, Sky and Channel 4. A credible test lane for entertainment launches previously priced out of broadcast. Read More
Free Screenings, Not Free Marketing
BFI Escapes has brought 115,000+ people into UK cinemas via free advance screenings since 2024. Useful as trial-friction reduction and audience building, provided there's a retention path attached. Read More
What Self-Distribution Really Costs
A new analysis of 57 published indie film release accounts puts real numbers against self-distribution, from a $1,000 theatrical opening to a $500,000 campaign that returned close to $80m. The pattern holds across budgets: filmmakers who raised marketing funds before release fared best, theatrical rarely recoups on its own, and the biggest cost is often unpaid labour that never appears in any budget line. Hundreds of Beavers spent almost as much releasing the film as making it, while Columbus took more than twice the return a traditional distribution deal would have offered. Read More
O8. REGULATION & POLICY
Brussels Forces Google to Open Up Android and Search
The European Commission has issued two binding decisions under the Digital Markets Act, requiring Google to give rival AI assistants the same system-level Android access it currently reserves for Gemini, and to share anonymised Google Search data with competing search engines. The interoperability obligations follow a Commission finding that third-party AI assistants can't currently compete on equal footing without that access. Data sharing is due to begin from January 2027, with Android changes following by July 2027. Non-compliance risks fines of up to 10% of Google's annual worldwide turnover. Read More
Government Sets Out Its Plan for UK Music
DCMS has published Turn It Up, a wide-ranging plan covering investment, skills, AI and fan protection across UK music. The parts most relevant to us: a draft bill to ban resale tickets being sold above face value and cap resale platform fees, a 15% business rates cut for live music venues from 2026/27 with a two-year freeze to follow, and a consultation on AI 'digital replicas' alongside a new taskforce on labelling AI-generated content. The plan also confirms £45 million in new Music Growth Package funding opening this summer, with a strand specifically for international touring and export support. Read More
O9. EXPERT INSIGHT
A Missing Piece of the Attribution Puzzle
Search Console can now show which searches lead fans to Instagram, TikTok, X and YouTube profiles, not just to a website. For artist and label teams, where the profile often matters more than the homepage, this closes a real blind spot. Nick breaks down what it means for content planning and where it fits alongside email and wider strategy. Read More
Why B2B Email Needs a Different Scorecard
B2B lists are small by design, so list growth and open rates rarely tell the real story. Darren makes the case for engagement segments over raw numbers, and for putting an honest pound value on what a contact is actually worth before chasing more of them. Read More
SEO Pulse: The June Search Updates That Actually Matter
Google's new AI search reporting in Search Console, fresh controls over generative AI inclusion, and another swift spam update all point the same way: visibility now means being cited and understood by AI systems, not just ranking. Rushi sets out what film, music and entertainment brands should check first. Read More
